Niamey, Niger’s capital city, is experiencing sustained growth and is increasing in size. This growth creates new needs in terms of infrastructure and services, particularly in the water and sanitation sectors in the outskirts of the city. In reality, Niger is behind in terms of direct household connections to city drains, in addition to sewer treatment plants. Every day, thousands of people suffer from diseases due to poor sanitation, such as diarrhoea illnesses, malaria, debilitating intestinal parasitic infections and other insect-related diseases.
